I got this beauty yesterday and it makes for a great birthday present to myself....a brand new Z series Daytona! Many thanks to Scott D for picking this up for me in Grand Cayman on his cruise last week!

I call this the 116520 Mark III - it is the third variation of the 116520 which I'm aware. The 116520 Mark I was this "thin hands" Daytona with the 4130 movement from 2000. Then, part way through the F series of the 116520, we have the Mark II variation with "fat hands" - as I discuss in the this article from 2005: http://www.rolexreferencepage.com/articles/6.html

This late Z series reprsents the latest iteration - the Mark III is it signficant for having the "RolexRolexRolex" engraving, AND the new "Parachrom Bleu" hair spring. I wanted to get a Mark III version, and Scott was kind enough to let me have this opportunity to purchase one through his dealer with whom he's made several purchases at retail.

I'm working on an article right now where I discuss the question of when exactly did the new hairspring appear on the Daytona. Until then, here's a couple of photos.

Hesalite Crystal revelation!

I was admiring my new Speedy moon last night and I was checking it out with a jewelry loop. I saw the small Omega symbol emblazoned smack on the center of the crystal. It must be printed on the inside in a raised letter. It is so well hidden but still so obvious if you know it is there. How come I have never seen pictures of these here on the forums? IMHO it is much cooler then the etched rolex symbol on their crystals. Is it a safety feature against forgeries? If so, how many years does it date back for the vintage buyers?

Spooky or what?

Now this is more than a little spooky.

This is my 1221st post on WTF (You'll obviously have to trust me on that in the future ) and I am using it to let you all know that I am now the proud owner of watch number 1221 of the 2005 LE 40th Anniversary Gemini IV Speedmasters.

Not sure when I'll be the recipient of it because it is currently in a safe at my usual AD's 200 miles away.

Hopefully, I'll either be able to organise a day to go and pick it up or maybe I could get it shipped to my new place of work.

Either way it feels great to have captured one of these rareties for my collection.

I can't wait to get my hands on it and start posting the compulsary pictures.

Thanks for all the advice I received on this guys. It really helped.

Hello everybody, I'm new here Just wanted to share with everybody my 1st Omega, the Seamaster Professional 300m Chronometer. I was researching around the internet on calibers from Omega, including WTF, and got the answer I wanted, a watch that has the 1120 caliber ... and decided that I will get the SMP 2255.80.00 cause I love the electic blue dial and since this is my 1st Omega, I wanted it to be a keeper. Not that easy to look around for one though since it has been discontinued .... but as Lady Luck has it, it's now in my hands It's accuracy has been running much better than COSC standards ... it's been running at a bit under +1s per day

I'd been looking for an SD for a few weeks and considered several different watchs from dealers and private parties alike. I ended up buying a nice, pre-owned, K serial SD.

I worked with one of our fantastic sponsors, Top Notch Watch. The experience couldn't have been easier and I'd do business with Scott Levin again in a heartbeat. Communication was probably too good if that's possible. I very likely wore out my blackberry emailing Scott during my travels in the last week! But he patiently answered every message (often from his own blackberry) and made me feel very comfortable about the buying process. We all know the deal about buying the seller and it was very easy to do so in this case.

He'd obtained it from the original owner and it came as a complete package with all the goodies (both boxes, documents/manuals, original dated sales receipt, bracelet tool, diving chart and even the SD anchor). It's in really fantastic shape for a watch purchased in 02. The price was fair and most importantly, I went with this particular SD because it was one of the last model years to come with lug holes. IMO, Rolex should have never done away with them. I just need to get a quick pressure test to ensure it's OK to swim with it. I took delivery yesterday and set it to time.gov at about 10AM. It's currently +5. I tend to keep track of new watches for a couple of months. As long as its w/in COSC specs, I'm fine. On an unrelated note, I've continued to track my GMTIIC simply because I'm amazed at its accuracy. It's currently at -6 after 152 days!!! That's means it's losing a whopping 0.039 per day!! I track it about once a week now and am slack jawed each time.

Anyway, I know you all know what a SD looks like but here's a quick pic from the seller and I'll snap some more when I get a minute.

Sadly, I think I may have to sell my beloved Omega Seamaster however as I just don't think I'll wear it much anymore. My 5 y/o son will be heartbroken when he hears that the seamonster watch is gone. he really wanted it!! But when he gets older, I'm confident he'll appreciate the SD just as much My SeMP was the first mechanical watch I bought which led me down the slippery slope of watch collecting.

I like the feel on the wrist, I'd thought about the Sub but I appreciated the exclusivity factor of the SD. I see lots of Subs but not many SD's. IMO, the SD is the tool watch...period. I've been trying on Sea Dwellers at AD's for about a year. I almost bought one new early this year after looking for a SS GMTIIC for several months. I finally found the GMT so I put off the SD search for a bit.

I will admit that I was never a fan of the cyclops but after wearing my GMTIIC for the last 6 months it really grew on me. I now need a quick double take to note the date on the SD. The eyes aren't what they used to be I suppose.

My only minor complaint is the clasp. I've just never been a fan of the stamped metal clasp. I know it works flawlessly, it just doesn't look like it fits a watch which is otherwise tops in its field.

Paradox of Sleep

One night an American businessman Lee Loree was lying in his bed reading a book. Next to him his wife began to toss. He asked her something; she answered and fell asleep again. About ten minutes later Lee addressed to his wife once again and in the same tone but she didn’t reply. It was very interesting to curious mister Loree why sleeping his wife reacts in different ways to the same irritants. So he started a research: in daytime he was reading about the nature of sleep and at night… At night he was experimenting with his wife.

His research resulted in a paradoxical conclusion: generally it’s better to rip a person off several minutes of sleep and to wake him or her up in the right moment than to let him or her have some more precious minutes of sleep. Having understood this fact, Lee Loree decided to invent a device that would wake one up in the right moment of time. He worked on the device together with an engineer and a somnologist. Six years later the work resulted in the creation of a unique alarm clock - Sleeptracker.

Sleeptracker looks as a traditional digital wristwatch. While owners of traditional alarm clocks set only the time for the wake-up, owners of the Sleeptracker also have to set the period of time preceding the time of the wake-up. During this interval the Sleeptracker starts to signal if the sleeper starts to toss in bed. Inside the case of the clock there is an accelerometer which recognized moves of a human’s hand (that’s why the device is rather massive) and sends a signal to the control unit. If the moves are recognized during the set interval of time the clock goes off. If this happens outside the set period the time when the sleeper moved rather actively is stored in the memory unit. So in the morning it is possible to check how often sleep phases were changing. With the help of the Sleeptracker you can keep a sleep-diary which will allow you to discover a lot of interesting things about your night life.

Alarm Clock for a Couple

aXbo is one more smart alarm clock developed and created by an Austrian - Boris Eis. The inventor of the smart alarm clock says: “Being a student I noticed that sometimes I woke up easily but sometimes with difficulty regardless of duration of sleep. And that was annoying.” So in the mid 1990s Eis decided to find out the reason for this phenomenon and discovered that it’s better to wake one up when he or she starts to toss.

The аXbo alarm clock work practically in the same way as the Sleeptracker. But instead of the wristwatch itself users put special bracelets on their wrists. The bracelets are equipped with a built-in sensor which is connected with the alarm clock wirelessly. The advantage of the aXbo is that it can wake up two people – and while he wakes up one of them the other is not being disturbed.

Boris Eis is planning to create a new version of his alarm clock which will wake the sleeper up in the end of the fast sleep (or rapid eye movement). So people will get the opportunity to wake up cheerful and to preserve the recollections about the last dream they saw that night.

With my current understanding, I just feel that the watch's contribution or enabling of cave exploration is a bit tenuous. Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the Exp and Exp-IIs (expecially white dials like CLs).

So now you can send me your watches when you need some service.

Here I will show you how it works.

I start with the universal case holder.

It′s no problem to get it open with correct tools.

The I use the crown release tool

And the tiny crown holder.

Then I pull out the movement.

The crown holder it′s a multi tool who can pull off the
hands too. Unfortunately it didn′t works on chronographs.

Then I will looking for things that not will be in place
until next service. I found out the logo need some new glue.

I have to do some works with the hands, the condition
is bad and some minor adjustments will help.

Time to see whats up below the dial.

Nothing fancy, just the date wheel.

So I have to pull off the date wheel to get a little
deeper inside the movement.

Not so many parts left here.

You have to be careful when you pull off the rotor, it′s
easy to damage it.

This time i was lucky, no problems to get it off.

Now I will pull off the rotor bearing bridge.

That was easy too.

And the special halfgear that shows it′s a real Rolex.

And all the part I will claen and give som lubricant.

Orvis has a special place in many a fly fisherman’s heart. They make high-quality rods and reels, and brand loyalty among fans is strong. Orvis doesn’t make their own watches, they contract with companies, including Citizen, to make watches with the Orvis brand name on them. Yesterday I was lucky to find one of their field watches in excellent condition at a thrift store for $12.99.

My watch is the Orvis Zambeiz and retails for just under $70. It has a Japanese (Citizen) quartz watch movement. Several things about this model — and my particular watch — impress me.

The watch rides close to the wrist, its 34 mm wide case feels heavy and solid. It has a sapphire crystal, hands outlined in black for easy daytime viewing, and a nice crown. The movement feels good and tight when setting time or date.

On the down side, the watch is only rated at 5 ATM (165 feet water resistant), and the luminous paint on the hands doesn’t glow. Those are two pretty important things for a fisherman; a watch that is highly water proof, and that is easy to read in low light. But Orvis advertises this watch as a “casual” model, and for that purpose it shines.

It has a screwback case back, with the word “Orvis” in large print. Basically, you could consider this watch on par with a better Swatch, or a sub-$100 Citizen or Pulsar — with the important caveat that a Pulsar would have excellent luminous and water resistance.

While on the subject of those two Japanese makers, let me point out Orvis offers a hand winding chronograph for around $150 in their catalog. I don’t know who makes the movement (Swiss?) — but it just goes to show Seiko or Citizen *could* make a low-priced automatic or manual wind chronograph if they wanted.

Back to my watch, the strap tells me this watch was worn a bit by someone. But the case is in excellent shape, without a mark on it. The previous owner probably wore it for a few years, until the battery wore out, and decided replacing the band and battery cost more than the watch was worth. So it was “caught and released.”

I’m happy to snag this watch and it’s gonna be fun to wear. It’s a keeper — I won’t throw it back. If you’re interested in getting an Orvis catalog, click here.
